Paul began his career with Alexander Howden Ltd in 1984 in the Oil, Gas and Energy Division and later in the North American Property and Energy Division. He was responsible for the broking and servicing of major corporate clients at Alexander & Alexander. After ten years with Alexander Howden Ltd, Paul moved to Lloyd Thompson Ltd (later JLT Risk Solutions Ltd), to head up the North American Property Department, which specialised in providing insurance solutions for large national and multinational corporate clients. He joined R K Harrison in 1999 to establish the Property Division and, on 1st August 2003, was appointed Group CEO.
